KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak on Friday night listed out seven reasons why the people must continue supporting Umno and the other components in Barisan Nasional.
He said the seven things the people should keep in mind when they decide whom to vote by considering between BN and the opposition, who had fulfilled their promises to the people.
"Who gave BR1M? Who gave book vouchers? Who gave education aid to all students? Who gave Felda a windfall? Who set up Kedai 1Malaysia? Who set up Klinik 1Malaysia? Who introduced Menu 1Malaysia? Who have expanded rural and urban roads? BN has done all of these?," he pointed out.
Then the prime minister asked the people to take into account who could promise a better tomorrow than today. The crowd roared their reply "Umno and BN!"
He also wanted the people to ponder who could protect the Federal Constitution, the laws, the official religion-Islam and the rights of other races. Again, the crowd went wild by shouting out "Umno! And BN!"
The fourth element that the people should ask themselves, Najib said: "Who can manage the economy so well? Answer me!" The crowd screamed: "Umno and BN!".
The prime minister also asked the people to mull over who could assure them the nation's peace and harmony; who could make changes in orderly manner, and who could decide on the nation's prosperity. The red sea of nearly 100,000 Umno members and supporters roared "Umno and BN!".
He said these were the question everyone must ask themselves once the 13th general election is called.
Umno had served and contributed to the nation and its people for nearly seven decades, he added.
"I can see many have been struck by the election fever.
"Should I have an audience with the King tomorrow?" The crowd replied with thundering applause "Yes!"
He asked them whether they were ready to face the election and again the crowd roared "Yes!".
"Can we win? Can we win? Can we win?" Najib asked.
The prime minister teased the excited crowd and asked them should he call the election tomorrow or in June or next year.
The crowd did not want it to be held next year, but agreed to have the general election as soon as possible.
Najib also urged the opposition to emulate Umno in its ability to gather nearly 100,000 people peacefully without any chaos.
He said the gathering did not need strong police presence.
"They are smiling and at ease. There is no tension here tonight.
"I don't understand why the opposition cannot do the same like us," he asked to the roaring cheer of red sea of Umno members and supporters.
He asked the crowd how would the police felt being jeered and insulted and even beaten with a baseball bat.
Najib also chided the opposition for punishing one of its members who had criticised Bersih by not extending his senatorship.
"Where is democracy in this? You can't even disagree and this is from a party who claim to be more democratic than others and even its party's name has democracy in it."
Najib said the government was even willing to offer them the Merdeka stadium, but they rejected it with an excuse it was too late.
"They had three days (to organise) to have it at the Merdeka stadium. Maybe, they were afraid that they could get a big crowd for it.
"But, I have also been told they wanted to barge through the police barricade to create. Without chaos, they were afraid they may not get news coverage from CNN, Al-Jazeera and BBC," he said.
On claim that the offered venue had no historical value, Najib said they just lied because Merdeka stadium was where the first prime minister had roared "Merdeka" signalling the nation's independence.
Najib, who is also Umno president, was proud that Umno able to gathered peacefully, in orderly manner because it respected the laws. He received a loud cheer for his statement on this.
Najib also challenged the opposition to show their strength by gathering at proper venue as what Umno had done.
"If they are Malaysians who love peace, harmony and respect the law, gather like Umno tonight."
In the largest show of solidarity, nearly 100,000 Umno members and supporters with their red attire flooded the Bukit Jalil Stadium last night.
The non-stop sound of vuvuzela filled the night air adding to the carnival-like atmosphere at the mass gathering.
The stadium rippled with Umno spirit as the red sea of people roared their support for the party and its leaders.
Earlier, Najib Razak could not stop smiling looking at the show of support from those attended Umno 66th anniversary celebration as he and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor were driven around the stadium in a buggy.
They came from across the nation in all modes of transportation including in about 2,000 buses ferrying people as far as Sabah, Perlis, Terengganu, Kelantan and Johor.
